About the program

The Rijksakademie offers a two-year international residency programme to around fifty artists that provides space for research, experiment and production of new work. Residents are supported with a studio, a work budget and a stipend and can seek advice from leading art professionals from a wide variety of cultural and creative backgrounds. In addition there is a rich research and production infrastructure, consisting of various technical workshops operated by specialists, a library and a historical and contemporary art collection. Within the interdisciplinary environment of the Rijkskademie there is complete freedom in research and working methods.

Location

The Rijksakademie is located in the Kavalleriekazerne building, near the centre of Amsterdam. The building is next to the Muiderpoort archway, near the Tropenmuseum and ARTIS Zoo and within reach of train stations. Most of the building is accessible for the physically challenged.

Eligibility

Application is open to artists with at least two years of independent professional experience after completing their education. Most candidates have finished an MA degree, but this is not mandatory. There are no age limits, however, the majority of Rijksakademie residents are between 25 and 35 years old.

Studio information

The Rijksakademie offers 50 studios. Every year, some 25 studios will become available.

Technical information

Technical specialists manage professionally-equipped workshops where artists can work and experiment with traditional and contemporary materials and techniques. Artistic, theoretical and technical facilities and expertise are the basis of the residency. In addition to the technical workshops, the Rijksakademie provides the residents with a number of other practical facilities such as several project spaces, a performance studio, a kitchen and a vegetable garden.

What the AiR provides

A studio, stipend of 15,000 € (in 2021) and working budget 1,500 €.
Advice on practical and financial matters like housing and residence permits is offered.

What the Artist pays

  • application fee 50 €
  • one-off participation fee of 3,750 € at the start of the residency

Outcome

Each year our Open Studios enables the artists to share their work with wider audiences in ambitious and imaginative ways. The public can also connect with the creative life of the Rijksakademie through our programme of lectures, performances and screenings that explore contemporary artistic practices and debates.
Rijksakademie alumni are active in diverse artistic and social contexts and their work can be found in art biennials, exhibitions and collections, through artist platforms or grassroots initiatives around the world.
