A Bottle of Dreams: Curating across Temporalities

Speaker: Eva Lin (Curator / Taiwan)
Moderator: Takuya Tsutsumi (Program Director of ICA Kyoto)
Consecutive Interpreter: Miho Tsujii

Drawing on Lin’s curatorial practice within an Indigenous community in Taiwan, this talk will explore how art takes shape through encounters, shared everyday life, and mutual learning. Following the ways dreams enter daily life, it will examine how relationships among people, land, materials, and ancestors bring different temporalities into contact. Through this community-rooted practice, the talk will consider how different times and worldviews can coexist, and how curating can open up diverse ways of knowing and experiencing the world.

Eva Lin

Eva Lin is an independent curator whose practice focuses on off-site and embodied methodologies, examining how curatorial processes engage local knowledge systems, social ecologies, and alternative epistemologies. Her projects frequently unfold in unconventional space—including abandoned industrial sites, military infrastructures, temples, historic mines, and Indigenous mountain communities—where long-term collaboration with local communities and cross-disciplinary practitioners forms a central part of her working method, enabling the uncovering of overlooked or underrepresented local narratives.
Lin approaches curatorial practice as a platform for knowledge production rather than representation, investigating the relational roles of materiality, landscape, and situated practices in the formation of cultural narratives. Through interdisciplinary experimentation, she positions exhibitions as evolving processes of dialogue, field research, and collective learning, exploring how curatorial frameworks can operate as relational infrastructures that connect artistic practice, community knowledge, and ecological contexts.
Her curatorial projects include the Austronesian Triennale 2027, 18th Biennale Jogja KAWRUH- Land of Rooted Practices (2025), Sleepless in Stone (2024), You and I Live on Different Planets at Centre Pompidou-Metz (2022, co-curated with Bruno Latour and Martin Guinard-Terrin), the Taipei Biennial 2020–21 Public Program, Matsu Biennial 2022 – Underground Matters, the 7th Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition – ANIMA, The Hidden South (2018), The Upcoming Past (2019), and Parallax: Damage Control (2017). She is currently the Art Director of mt.project.

About ICA Kyoto TALK

ICA Kyoto was set up in 2020 as an adjunct to the Kyoto University of the Arts Graduate School, and since then has offered an ongoing program of talks with guest artists, curators, and researchers working in Japan and elsewhere. ICA Kyoto TALK is part of this program, and has now merged with the previous Global Art Talk initiative in a platform designed to connect Kyoto with diverse art scenes worldwide, and encourage dialogue. The aim of ICA Kyoto TALK is to open up new perspectives by moving between local, on-the-ground activities and global trends to deliver authentic experiences of our multilayered world.
